Compare the same energy service

A useful comparison starts with the loads to be served, operating hours and required backup period. Comparing the purchase price of a generator with the full cost of solar and storage gives an incomplete picture.

List the costs over time

For a generator, consider purchase, fuel, servicing, repairs and replacements. For solar and storage, consider design, equipment, installation, maintenance and eventual component replacement. Use quotations and your own operating records rather than an assumed universal saving.

Energy delivered matters as much as installed capacity. Solar output varies with the site resource and conditions, while fuel use depends on the generator and its operating load. Financing and replacement timing can also change the result.

Build a scenario before deciding

Use a stated comparison period, realistic operating assumptions and several fuel or maintenance scenarios. A site-specific assessment can compare upfront cost, operating cost and continuity requirements.

Some sites may retain a generator alongside solar and storage. The appropriate mix depends on the energy requirement and operating priorities. KOSP does not publish a fixed payback period or savings promise without a project-specific basis.
